The Civic Mace.
This beautiful item was presented to the Rotary Club of Dundee in the golden year of rotary in 1955. The mace was designed to follow the tradition of civic maces which evolved from the battle mace, or club-like weapons of medieval days. The sergeant-at-arms, or arms servant, carried such weapons, his modern counterpart today being the council officer or mace-bearer. The head is surmounted by a royal crown or mural coronet, appropriated to a royal borough.
